I have a good friend in Portland, Terry, a realtor and the nicest guy you could ever meet, but his approach to work is a tad lackadaisical, meaning he just barely scrapes by. I have a good friend on the Big Island, Cheryl, who is the nicest gal you could ever meet, but unlike my friend in Portland, she is a a self-starting dynamo who will not only generate a lot of income for herself but any real estate agency lucky enough to employ her.

I first met Cheryl as a teacher at Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School. It was the first day back for teachers after summer break, and my first day starting a new job with the school as a virtual learning teacher. As I nervously walked in the room, buzzing with teachers catching up, Cheryl was the first person to greet me with a big smile and a kind hello. Her thoughtful gesture meant more than she could know and I immediately felt more at ease.
I was lucky to work more closely with Cheryl the following year when she joined the Kaupe'a Virtual Learning team as a 3rd-5th grade teacher. She jumped into her new position with vigor, ready to learn and contribute as much and as soon as possible. She has continued to show this same level of pride in her work throughout this past school year and I am so grateful she is part of the program. Cheryl is always willing to listen, but also does her research and voices her opinions, which only helps strengthen our virtual learning community.
