Buyer
As a first-time home buyer, I quickly learned that finding a house and buying a house are two totally different things. If you're patient, it's not that hard to find a house that you like. But if you want to actually buy it, you're going to need the help of a professional. Thankfully for my wife and me, that professional was Mary Ann Wallace.
We started our search in June of 2014, paused for a few months after an employment layoff, made our first offer in February of 2015, and closed on that home in March. During those 9 months (Give or take -- I’m bad at math) Mary Ann answered every question we had, at all hours of the day. We probably met in person around ten times, exchanged hundreds of text messages, and dozens of phone calls and emails. Mary Ann never made us feel stupid for asking a question, and she always stuck with a query until she had an answer for us.
Buying a home is a tiring process, full of ups and downs. If Mary Ann had shown the slightest hint of annoyance or fatigue with our house search, my wife and I probably would have thrown in the towel and stuck with renting. We needed someone who would get us through the tough times with equal parts straight talk and encouragement. Mary Ann never sugarcoated anything and was always to the point, which might be tough for those who don’t like to confront reality, but in the Bay Area market you really need to deal with the facts head on if you’re going to buy a home.
It was during the offer/closing process where Mary Ann really earned her money. She turned around our first offer in a matter of hours after we got the go-ahead to make an early offer. When it seemed like we were going to be outbid after the seller changed their mind on early offers, Mary Ann worked with us to figure out our true best offer, and made sure we were as competitive as possible.
Once our offer was accepted things got even busier, and once again, Mary Ann came through. She made sure other parties were timely with their paperwork, she scheduled inspections for us, and she acted as a liaison between my wife and I and the money people. This was key, because by the end of the process I was pretty tired of the money folks (and they were equally tired of me), and Mary Ann was the one who kept things from falling apart.
Now that we’re in the house, we don’t need Mary Ann’s help anymore. Oh wait, that’s not true. She has helped find contractors and leaned on them when their work wasn’t up to par; she’s answered a number of little questions about our new home; and she even arranged for us to get a home warranty.
To sum it all up: You can get yourself a realtor who will tell you everything is gumdrops and lollipops, or you can hire Mary Ann. She won’t always tell you what you want to hear, but she’ll always be honest, and she won’t rest until you’ve gotten the house you want. Actually, she won’t even rest then, she’ll keep supporting you. I have no idea when/if she ever sleeps.
I do need to list one negative, though. Mary Ann did not try to bribe us in any way for this review. I figured maybe she’d offer us a nice dinner, or at the very least, a bar of dark chocolate. Seriously, just one delicious dark chocolate candy bar would have been enough to get me to write anything. But no, she has too much integrity and figures she’ll just stand by her good work when it comes review time. Consider yourself warned.
